Summer may not officially be here according to the calendar, but the last official holiday of spring, Memorial Day, is just days away. In addition to longer days and warmer weather, summer also brings new opportunities to practice creative eco-friendly habits.
Danny Seo’s article How to Throw a Green Party, on Epicurious.com, notes that “according to the Clean Air Council, every day 43,000 tons of food are thrown out in the United States, and each year Americans toss out enough paper and plastic cups, forks, and spoons to circle the equator 300 times.” Seo goes on to offer eco-friendly suggestions for food, décor, beverages and entertainment.
Rather than add to the paper and plastic wastefulness, Seo suggests choosing either reusable plastic plates and utensils or “eco-disposable” products, which are not, according to Seo, “an oxymoron. In fact, it’s becoming increasingly easy to find affordable environmentally friendly disposable tableware in mainstream stores. Whole Foods' 365 store brand has durable plates and bowls that look like sturdy paper ones but are actually made from renewable and biodegradable sugar cane.”
The website Celebrate With Stylealso offers a variety ideas for eco-friendly products and solutions, including using potted plants and flowers rather than cut for decoration. Not only are they inherently reusable, they also provide health benefits by being natural air filters.
